Looking for projects to participate in Outreachy!

Is your open source project interested in supporting a more diverse community of contributors? If so, we’re looking for partners to join us for the next round of Outreachy!

Outreachy provides three-month internships for people from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech. Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. Interns work remotely with mentors from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities on projects ranging from programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science. Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy sponsors or in jobs that use the FOSS skills they learned during their internship.

Outreachy internships are open internationally to women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Internships are also open to residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. We are planning to expand the program to more participants from underrepresented backgrounds in the future.

The DIAL Open Source Center is sponsor of this excellent program, which runs both during summer and winter. (As measured in the northern hemisphere!) Our friends at Open Data Kit are currently working on an awesome Outreachy program with 2 interns during this winter term. Learn more about their current work:

So, we’re looking to recruit several projects who are interested in working with an intern during the summer. If your project is also participating in Google Summer of Code (either independently or through the OSC’s umbrella org), please know that the program runs in parallel and is very similar, with two exceptions:

  1. Participants need not be enrolled as a university student; and
  2. Projects can also be non-coding related, such as documentation, design, or anything else that helps your project be successful.

If you have questions about the program or how it works, please review https://www.outreachy.org/ and use this thread for Q&A. Several of our forum members such as @lognaturel, @wonderchook, and I have participated previously so can give share first-hand experiences.

If you are interested in discussing how your project might participate, please send a direct message to @gab here on the forum ASAP so we can get your name on the list of potential participants!

Thanks to everyone who expressed interest to participate in Outreachy this summer! We are happy to be sponsoring the following projects’ participation, subject to approval of the Outreachy organizers:

Participating projects, your designated point of contact has been notified, but please drop me a line or contact the Outreachy organizers if you have questions about next steps. Congratulations and best wishes for an awesome summer!

A quick note to Outreachy participating orgs: Please make sure you have gone in to the Outreachy web site & updated things so your project appears in the first list of projects at https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/, under the heading “Mentor or Volunteer for a Participating FOSS Community”.

If your project is in the second list, “Past Participating FOSS Communities”, you’ll need to make sure to update your profile to be listed as participating in this coming round.

If you need any assistance, let me know.
